How to Hit the Dab (Without Wrecking Yourself)
Dabs have a reputation. Mostly because everyone knows someone who took
way too big of a dab, coughed for ten minutes, and stared at the wall like they
just saw the ending of Inception.
Good news: it doesn't have to be like that. This is the
no-embarrassment starter guide to dabbing right — smooth, tasty, and in control
every single time.
Step 1
Start Small — Like, Really Small
Your first dab should be rice-grain sized. Not a glob. Not a
"let's impress the group" dab. Not whatever that person in the YouTube video loaded up.
Concentrates are significantly more potent than flower — a tiny amount goes a
very long way. The beauty of dabbing is that you can always take more. You
cannot un-take a dab.
Build up slowly, learn your tolerance, and you'll find the sweet spot that hits
smooth and perfect every time without sending you to the couch for the rest of the night.
Golden Rule:
If it looks like a gummy bear… it's too big. Start with a grain of rice and work up from there.
Step 2
Heat It Right — The Temp Is Everything
Temperature is the single biggest factor in the quality of your dab.
Too hot and you're burning your concentrate. Too cold and it won't vaporize properly.
Torch + rig: Heat the banger, then let it cool 30–60 seconds. E-rig: Set your temp and let the device handle it — perfect heat, no guesswork.
Sweet Spot:
Most connoisseurs live in the 315–450°F range — that's where terpenes shine and every hit is smooth as butter.
Step 3
Inhale Smooth — Not Like a Vacuum
You're not trying to win a lung capacity contest. You're not trying to clear a bong in one
pull. This is a different experience entirely.
Think slow and steady. Let the vapor come to you. A gentle, controlled inhale
gives the vapor time to cool slightly before it hits your lungs — which means a
smoother, tastier, less harsh hit.
Think more "sipping espresso" than "shop vac." The more
controlled your draw, the better the experience.
Pro Move:
If you feel the cough rising, back off and breathe through your nose for a second. Don't fight it — just ease up.
Step 4
Cap It — Don't Skip the Carb Cap
If you're using a traditional rig, a carb cap is not optional — it's
essential. Dropping your carb cap over the banger controls airflow and creates a
low-pressure environment that vaporizes your concentrate at a lower,
more efficient temperature.
Without a carb cap, a significant portion of your concentrate burns off or
escapes as waste before you can inhale it.
Directional carb caps let you spin the airflow around the banger for even
more efficient vaporization and better flavor extraction.
No cap =
Less flavor + wasted concentrate + "why was that so weak?" — always cap it.
Step 5
Exhale and Chill — Pace Yourself
Don't hold it forever. You're not in a 2008 YouTube challenge video. The active compounds
absorb almost immediately — holding your hit longer just irritates your
lungs without adding anything extra.
Exhale normally, relax, and wait. Give it a solid 5–10 minutes before
you decide if you want another. Concentrates are fast-acting and
deceptively potent — what feels mild in the moment can hit differently
once it fully settles in.
Dabbing is a marathon, not a sprint. The best sesh is a controlled one —
where you feel exactly how elevated you want to feel, not "where did the last two hours go?"
The Vibe Check Rule:
Wait before you go again. You can always take more — you can't undo a dab.
Common Mistakes
Avoid These and You're Golden ✅
Too much concentrate — The #1 beginner mistake. Start rice-grain small.
Too hot of a nail — Burnt, harsh flavor and a rough hit. Let it cool.
Skipping the carb cap — Wastes concentrate and kills flavor. Always cap.
Not waiting between dabs — Concentrates are potent and cumulative. Give it time.
If you're coughing hard:
9 times out of 10 it's too hot or too much — usually both. Dial it back.
The Goal
Smooth, Tasty & Strong — Not a Truck 🔥
A good dab should feel smooth, taste incredible, and hit
strong — but not like you just got hit by a truck.
When done right, dabbing is more like sipping a perfectly pulled espresso
than chugging an energy drink. It's a refined experience — precise, flavorful,
and exactly as elevated as you want to be.
Respect the dab, and the dab will respect you. Start small, stay low temp,
cap every time, and pace yourself.
