WHAT IS OUD?
Oud, also known as Agarwood or Aloeswood is a type of incense with a unique aroma that derives from fungus-infected trees. These trees produce a special resin when insects burrow into them exposing the interior of the tree. The exposed inner heartwood of the tree becomes infected and this creates the special aromatic resin that we all know as Oud.
Oud is either harvested from the wild or cultivated in a plantation. Wild Oud is superior quality than grown varieties. Oud wood resin is made into an essential oil that is considered by many to be ‘liquid gold”. This valuable essential oil is used in all types of exotic perfumes and is an expensive commodity in fragrance markets.
Oud Incense has been used for thousands of years by cultures throughout the Middle East in as well as Asia. It is commonly burned in churches and mosques as a part of religious ceremonies and to bless spaces with its pleasant plus distinct aroma.
For people living in the Old World, perfumes like Oud and Frankincense hold an important spiritual quality due to their ability to elicit delightful scents.
In Islam, it is said that the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) preferred the aroma of Oud over any other perfume. In Tibet Oud is burned in Buddhist temples as part of their sacred traditions.
It’s important to have pleasant smells around you!
